Organ Donation

I recently had an article published on Croakey about supporting reform in the organ donation sector. I feel strongly that everyone seems to be Eddie the Expert without having any sense of how a hospital works, the sensitivities around someone dying and someone living as a result of that death, and then the mechanics of transporting organs and tissue from one side of the country to the other.

I continue to be buoyed by the work of the DonateLife agencies, the Organ & Tissue Authority and the community groups and individuals who support organ and tissue donation.  Ultimately, they have supported a reform agenda that has resulted in a further increase in the 2011 calendar year.

The final year results for 2011 are to be released in early January but you can look at the data to 30 November 2011 at the Australian & New Zealand Organ Donation Registry.  I’ll update data here when it’s available.

Gift of Life Incorporated is again ORGANising the DonateLife Walk on Wednesday, 22 February 2012, at 7 am sharp.  Please encourage your family, friends and colleagues to join in the walk, to Discover the facts about organ donation, to Decide what they want to do in relation to organ donation, and to Discuss their wishes with their loved ones.
